This week I visited a blog that reminded me of a passion I have about proposals. Keep the message central, and the noise to a reasonable background hum. Patsi Krakoff’s Blog is about her coaching for ezines and blogs. You can take a look at it here.

I don’t care for three column layout in a blog. It is too busy, with color images in the side columns detracting from the content. She’s done a nice job with the layout, and has a good selection of interesting things going on in her side columns. This layout is popular on other blogs as well.

But I felt more compelled to look at the pictures and read the side columns than the main column. This would be a very bad idea for a proposal.

Remember that the purpose of your proposal is to compel selection of your firm. Anything that distracts, detracts from that mission. Your credibility is enhanced when you use color, images and layout to enhance your message, rather than distract the reader.

What is true for a retail website, an advertising layout or other communication devices may not be true for your proposals.
