Docs and Proposals in MS Word: Where to Find Help!

Am I the only one who has issues with MS Word?
(Laughter from the crowd subsides…)

According to Microsoft, Word is not intended for use in creating documents over 100 pages (or 50 if you insert images). But not many proposal teams can afford to convert to Framemaker or Quark because the learning curve would shrink our elasticity drastically. (More on elasticity in the next blog entry.)

I ran across a post on Dave Taylor’s blog about “Can I Recover Lost Text from a Microsoft Word Document.” This is a great tip.

Then I realized I can offer some additional resources I’ve gleaned from members of the Society of Technical Communicators over the last year of listserv postings.

The first place I go for help on-line is the MVP FAQ site. These folks are MS Word Gurus and have archived all kinds of articles and fixes for common and uncommon problems. They are way beyond my capabilities with MS Word, and the fixes are written so I could implement them.

Another site is the on-line archive of the WORD-PC listserv in Great Britain. This is searchable, so answers and discussion threads here are good break-time reading.

Finally, Shauna Kelly, who is one of the MVPs (Most Valuable Professionals) recognized by Microsoft, offers an index of instructions and tips, with a section for beginners, or those of us beginning a bigger or more complex document than we’ve tried before!
