Think of what you write as a meal. You certainly don't expect the reader to swallow it whole. A paragraph is the equivalent of what you can fit on a fork. It's the most you can expect your reader to swallow at once. Readers are accustomed to taking in all of a paragraph at once, so you must be careful not to choke them. If you can't decide where to start a new paragraph, but you can see that the paragraph is too long, start it at the beginning of any new sentence. That's always better than gagging your reader.
