By Laura Ricci Situation: An International Conglomerate issued an RFP for a complex project to begin within 60 days. Proposals were due in 30 days and required a detailed response of approximately 400 pages of original copy. Predicament: The level of effort required for this project is a team of 6 to 10 members, working closely for at least 6 weeks. We had available 2 people, and just 3 weeks in which to complete the project. The only other resources with the technical knowledge for this project were located in offices half way around the globe. (c)2005 Laura Ricci Saving Grace: The proposal team had been dissecting their work processes for ease of training new members around the world. Now we were forced to test these "modules" of work in order to disperse the proposal among several offices around the world, our only way to incorporate the manpower needed. Outcome: The proposal shipped on time and WON! Lessons learned: The advantages of time zones allowed us to pass critical sections around the globe, effectively getting 3 shifts working on the same pages every day. The disadvantages of time zones made phone conference meetings impossible, highlighting the differences between those who are facile with e-mail communication (complete concise and accurate) and those who use e-mail as an introduction to a phone meeting. Action taken: 1) Beefed up communication training to be ready for the next global project. 2) Incoming team members are tested for communication skills as a part of their application process.(c)2005 Laura Ricci Here's what the CEO for this company had to say about this program |
