"Just wanted to let you know that your record is still intact. We were awarded the contract for the Coast Guard The Ports and Waterways Safety System. We did extremely well. The presentation in particular was very very well received. That was what won it." --Tim Kinsella of Lockheed Martin
The teams I coach have won every time. I've had the honor of coaching Oral proposals for almost every government agency using Oral presentations.
My methods are different from most Orals Coaches.
Your team is not expected to be professional actors. So presentation skills adopted from many pubic speaking practices aren't necessary. In fact, I believe they damn proposal teams to mediocre performance.
In 1995, a few federal agencies decided to speed up procurements by requiring Oral Proposals. I hoped it was a fad. Subjecting technical folks to an Oral Presentation was pure torture for many of them.
By 1996, I could see that Oral Proposals were not fading. So, I went back to school nights and weekends to refresh my training and learn the latest communication and psychological techniques to improve oral communications. So far, I've never lost an Oral proposal.
My goal is simply to outfit your team with tools to allow each of them to remain calm, answer questions to the best of their ability, and project their image as a qualified professional. Seems to work. After all, if you were choosing between a nervous twitchy engineer and a fellow who reminds you of your favorite neighbor, the choice would be easy.
I've supported Oral Teams winning contracts from:
DOE Oak Ridge Hanford Los Alamos LANL
DoD Army ACOE Air Force Navy
Coast Guard
Teams I've worked with: Range in size from 5 to 26 presenters. Presentation times range from 1 hour to 8 hours. Question and Answer sessions range from 30 minutes to 4 hours. Contract values range from $5 Million to $1 Billion.
My goal is: exquisite preparation, calm confidence, and the sensation that your team are real people, capable and qualified for the work at hand.
